“It was the equivalent of coming home and my girlfriend saying, ‘I’m leaving you.’”

The 2017 MABRA season starts next weekend and for two racers, it won't be the same!

Back in 2009, two triathletes found themselves on the same road racing team, it was the start of a great friendship that will last forever! Gradually both triathletes found the lure of the road too much and they found their physical traits to be pretty well matched for success....one a diesel, the other a rocket! Both knew their roles and were willing to sacrifice for overall team success, dare we say a match made in heaven. Banks & Hogan....ABRT's Renshaw & Cavendish!

The proof was in the pudding.....
Win....Tysons!

Win.....Black Hill!

Win....Kings Way!

Win....Carl Dolan!

Celebrating the win....work done!
Then one day it happened....the partnership dissolved at the end of 2016. Hogan left for a rival team and Banks staying at ABRT didn't follow.  With that news, Banks told the local media that: “It was the equivalent of coming home and my girlfriend saying, ‘I’m leaving you.’”

What will the 2017 season bring for both riders? Only time will tell......perhaps it will be the new lease of life that both riders need. There is clear respect between the riders but now on opposing teams it will be game on once the flag drops....As Banks states though "there will always be time for a beer after"

March 2014: Training Ramblings.....Let's go racing!

March just blew by.....Wow!  From a training perspective, it was nothing at all to write home about, so I won't even attempt to ramble about that (you can see the monthly totals at the end).  The good aspect of March is that the road racing season came in full force and already I have raced more than I have in the past two seasons!  Four races and three team wins to date...

First up was the New Jersey Spring Series, where a few of the ABRT crew headed up, raced, took the money and won.  Of the three races we competed in we won all three.  Ace demolished the 45+ field to start with, then Pat and I rode the perfect race to get him to the win with a textbook lead out and sprint. In the final race of the day we all raced and Ace soloed away from the start and won, while Pat and I patrolled any attempts to catch him.  Check out Pat's video of the Cat 3/4 race he won...

The good news is that with the greater emphasis placed on training this winter for road racing, it appears to have paid off.  Those first races in New Jersey gave me some confidence that I could race and be active rather than just hanging on for dear life.

The next race up was the start of the MABRA race season at the Black Hill Circuit Race. For this one I took the plunge and entered the 35+ 1,2,3 race, so yes Big Boy racing!  Besides it was the only race I could do as we had a date with the Terps in the NCAA Tourney later in the day.  My sole goal for this race was to try and hang in. For those not up on their road racing, the difference between a Cat 3 and Cat 1 is pretty large in ability terms!

Let's just say that the major wreck on the first lap that I somehow missed didn't do anything to settle me down but after a 20min neutralization it was game on again and surprisingly it turned out to be tons of fun. The field is certainly much smoother as the ability increases and I think that helped me, either that or I do actually have some fitness at the moment.  The unofficial game plan was to get Pat into a position to unleash his sprint at the end so after doing some chasing of breaks and the like, I took a flyer with 2 laps (of the 1 mile course) to go. The hope was either to hold off the charging pack or at least string it out to give Pat a cleaner look at the finishing line. With just under a lap to go I was caught but the field was strung out and the video shows the rest.......

Boom....Pat is two for two in sprint finishes and is now a marked man!

The final race of March was this past weekend at Jefferson Cup in Charlottesville, VA....the historical season opener for the MABRA calendar. The Cat 3/4 was scheduled for 60miles but was shortened by a lap to 50miles what with the 40 degree temps, rain and wind, a day for the hardmen! In a sadistic kind of way it turned into a fun race. Again I felt as though I had good legs and was able to be active in the race rather than just a passenger.  With two laps and 20miles to go I took my shot at glory, hoping that a few others would want that shot as well.  It took a while but gradually my solo effort became two, then three and then six.  We had a gap over the field and were working well together. The weather had ground everyone down and with a lap to go we were still away from the field and a sizable gap.

With about 5 miles to go our small group started to splinter and my call to engine room came back with a distinctive message....

There was nothing left and a potential podium finish went riding off up the road as me and two others slowly got pulled back to the peloton with a couple of miles left.  The remainder of the break stayed away and fought over the podium spots....it was one of those days, what if?  On the positive note you have to be in the break to win it and I'm glad that I was able to initiate the winning break, next time!

It was one of those days at Jefferson Cup.......
March Total: 373.04 Miles / 23 hours 9 minutes

Swim: 2,250 yards / ~1.28 miles / 0 hours 42 minutes (yeah I know)
Bike: 341.40 miles / 18 hours 42 minutes
Run: 30.36 miles / 3 hours 44 minutes

Oct 19th - Oct 25th: Training Ramblings

Another not very big week in terms of training volume.  The week started off poorly with a very short 'cross race at DCCX. I raced the 3/4 race and on the 2nd lap whilst carving through a corner my rear tubular rolled.  Down I went and back to the beer tent to find Sarah, race over after 11mins! DCCX has built itself into the biggest race of the MABRA Super8 calendar and is a ton of fun to spectate as well as race.

That's the good thing about my cross season, yes I want to do well in races, who doesn't, but in the end it is just a bit of off-season fun. There is always another one next week. It's not like an Ironman or 70.3m where you train all year for just two or three goal races.  Perhaps that is why I like the cross season so far, no pressure! After all  no-one expects a triathlete to be able to cyclocross do they?

The rest of the week was pretty hit and miss, we have friends visiting from the UK, which is awesome and it's great to be able to spend time with them without having to head out for long training hours (hint for anyone wanting to come visit....the Fall is best!)

As such, weekly volume was low, but I did get two swims in and increased the run mileage for the 4th consecutive week.

My weekly swim, bike, and run totals:

Total: 37 Miles / 5 hours 17 minutes
Swim: 4,350 yards / ~2.47 miles / 1 hours 25 minutes
Bike: 14 miles / 1 hours 01 minutes
Run: 20 miles / 2 hours 31 minutes
Core: 20mins

Should Have Know.....Cycling Publicity!

With Lance fracturing his collarbone this week, we should have know that he would suddenly appear on ESPN and in all the newspapers. He was even on the front page of the Express (local D.C. rag) on Tuesday. Generally, the only time that cycling gets any column inches in this part of the world is when Lance does something or when someone gets thrown off the Tour as part of a drugs scandal. Unless Lance rides the Giro or the Tour, I doubt that cycling will be in the news again this season...and it's only March!

The only news item that could be bigger than Lance would be if President Obama was seen down at Hains Point challenging Mayor Fenty for the final sprint....I wonder if they could get that to happen!

Perhaps the powers that be at MABRA should get on the marketing bandwagon and start sending in race reports to the The Post and The Times. Over the summer before Redskin fever hits us, the sport section will be relatively light. The Nationals are going to suck, they don't cover the O's anymore and aside from D.C United and the Mystics (the WNBA team!), nowt else will be going on. Perfect time to get some local cycling action in the news and it would be great publicity for MABRA and the local team sponsors.

A Welcome to the Gam Jams Ambassador Blog Roll....

If you race bikes in the Mid-Atlantic I am sure you are aware of the Gam Jams website, which is "Where Mid-Atlantic Bike Racers Roll". As of today I have linked to the Gam Jams Post Update as well as the Ambassador Blog Roll which provides updates from numerous blogs of the guys and gals in the MABRA District. Generally they provide humerous, informative and inspiring insights into the life of bike racers (both professional and amateur) all over the Mid-Atlantic region. As is the way of the web though they also provide a wealth of useless posts and time-wasting opportunties :-)

Enjoy!
