After our brief sojourn back to the UK and a mini-break from training, it is back for the final few days of hard stuff before the official taper begins. Flying east is always bad from a jetlag point of view and it is hard to try and adjust to the time difference. I would hate to have to race after flying east especially if you didn't have a week or more to adapt. Now I know why the Olympic team headed to China about a month in advance.
Fortunately I was coming off a big training month and knowing that time is always tight, I only scheduled to do a couple of training sessions, anything else would be a bonus. The first session didn't exactly go to plan. I was 30mins into a ride on my old bike that my Dad now has and I rode over a drill bit, tire straight down and the mini-pump managed to get all of about 40psi into the spare. Rode home slowly and went out for a tempo run, not exactly the 2 hour ride I had planned. Run was great though, ran past some of my old haunts, past our old house and then got lost in some new estate :-) 2nd run was cool, along the seafront, saw people eating ice cream at 10:00am, up the cliffs (they used to be bigger when I was a kid) and past the casinos.
Although it was a whirlwind trip back home for unfortunate circumstances, it was cool to see friends and family, including seeing my niece for the first time . Four days at home was kind of nice as it was long enough to see everyone but short enough not to be too tiring. Perhaps we should do whirlwind trips more often........
